Diana Schaefering has spent 30 years analyzing and reanalyzing the biomechanics of skating skills. In working with players of all ages, from beginner to professional levels, the system Diana has developed adapts itself to the age level of the players involved. Schaefering's system builds and stands on fundamentals that demand attention to proper execution. Diana has a unique gift of breaking down every skill into simple easy-to-follow, step-by-step progression with word cues that paint vivid pictures that players and coaches at any level can relate to. Included on each DVD is a bonus chapter in which Schaefering shares her effective positive teaching methodology. Whether you are a coach, player, or parent, this series is one that will greatly enhance your understanding of skating!

For Beginners DVD
In this presentation, Schaefering presents "skating basics" - essentially the ABC's of fundamental skating - that is applicable to any player at any age/level. Before delving into the technical aspects of skating, Schaefering begins this incredible presentation with Tips on Teaching and sharing positive teaching methods she has refined in some 30 years as a skating coach. With her "classroom" of three young players to teach and demonstrate, you will witness, firsthand, Schaefering's creative and easy-to-understand instruction, including verbal cues and word pictures, to assist a player in "engraining the feel" to develop a solid foundation for a career of efficient skating. Diana breaks her presentation into the following segments: "Proper Body Position", "Inside and Outside Edges", "Skating Backward", "The Backward 'C' Cut", and "Forward Crossovers". Diana's philosophy (no skater should ever venture far from the most basic core of skating fundamentals) is reflected throughout this presentation as she offers drills and coaching tips that continually reinforce these basics.

Backwards Skating DVD
Schaefering's overall focus of this presentation is the backward "C" cut or neutral zone backward skating instruction. In Part 1, Defensive Skating Positioning, Diana sets up body positioning specific to the backward skating position, stick position that is most advantageous to poke checking, the bottom hand position, all with verbal cues, drills and strategies to maintain an appropriate body position and assist in body weight transfer. Schaefering then moves into the "nuts and bolts" of the backward "C" cut. Diana feels that it is essential for a player to establish a strong closed hip flexor position and shares drills that assist the player to not only gain mobility in the hip flexor but also to help the player establish a feel for the correct technique for the backward "C" cut. Schaefering proceeds with the execution of the "C" cut, first teaching single leg, then alternating pushing legs. Throughout this presentation Diana coaches/utilizes varied age demonstrators offering age-specific teaching tips and how to spot technical tendencies that each age group encounters from a basic level skater to a more advanced skater. Schaefering then continues her teaching/drill progression with more technical information and along the way shares instruction and drills designed to help a skater maximize movement, awareness, and efficiency in backward skating.

Forward Stride DVD
Schaefering begins with discussion of the fact that the forward stride is not a natural motion, but a learned motion. The player uses a minimum amount of movement for maximum levels of efficiency by utilizing a low body position, complete weight transfer, driving through the extension of the push, and making sure of a controlled recovery. In Part 1,The Basic Mechanics, Diana breaks down the forward stride beginning with "ready position," and in Part 2, Body Positioning Drills, Schaefering shares drills that reinforce a proper body position. In Part 3, The Makeup of the Forward Stride, Diana breaks down the forward stride into bending, extending, and recovering. She also presents teaching tips/drills that teach the skater what to "feel for" when doing the skill correctly. In Part 4, Body Control, Diana shares body control specifics to gain efficiency through maximizing drive from the hip. In Part 5, Problem Solving, Schaefering presents common errors with coaching solutions to correct each problem. This exceptional presentation is enhanced with watching Diana work with demonstrators that range in age from elementary through high school.

Forward Crossover
In this presentation, Diana breaks down forward crossovers into six parts. In Part 1, The Inside Edge, Schaefering shares techniques and drills that enable the player to learn and understand the inside edge. She also offers many tips to detect both proper and improper position of the leg, weight application of the blade and how to identify and repeat the correct "feel." In Part 2, Line of the Cross, Diana works with the actual line, or angle, of the cross. She shares specific techniques and drills that address how upper body control is necessary for a successful crossover. In Part 3, The Crossover Point, Diana teaches how to get a player to crossover at the top of the thigh, including a continued progression that leads a player to the correct feel of the proper crossover point. In Part 4, The Underneath Push, Schaefering finishes the crossover teaching the underneath push. Schaefering then pulls it all together with an overview and drills that incorporate all four parts of the skill into a complete continual flowing crossover. In Part 5, Problem Solving, Diana shares four of the most common problems/errors that she experiences with crossovers and offers a solution to each problem. In Part 6, Living on the Edge, Schaefering offers a bonus of tips, drills and skills to enhance mastery of the crossover!
